The Greenane farmer, Pat McCormack, represented Tipperary ICMSA as part of the Milk Suppliers Association delegation that met the Glanbia management team last week in intense discussions about the prospects for milk price.
Mr McCormack chairs the ICMSA Dairy Committee and is widely viewed as one of the country’s most acute dairy analysts. He was satisfied with the meeting and he assured Tipp’s Glanbia suppliers that ICMSA would continue to monitor the situation closely. The Tipp farm leader also called on the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Mr. Simon Coveney, to immediately pay the Dairy Efficiency Scheme payment to farmers which Mr McCormack pointed out is now long overdue.
“When the scheme was initially introduced farmers were promised that they would receive their payment at the end of each year. That didn’t happen and then earlier this year farmers were promised that they would receive their payment by the end of February. That didn’t happen either. These two promises have been broken and I’m calling on the new Minister for Agriculture to set a new standard where payment deadlines will again be met and the first step should be to announce the immediate payment of the Dairy Efficiency Scheme payment. Farmers have complied with the Term and Conditions of the Scheme and it is about time that the Department kept up its side of the bargain and made the payment”, concluded Mr. McCormack.
