Town centre shoppers, and visitors coming into Clonmel to do their Christmas shopping, will benefit from free parking in all Borough Council car parks during each weekend in December.
The initiative, which takes effect from Saturday, December 3rd up to and including New Year’s Eve, is designed to attract more shoppers into the town in the pre and post-Christmas period. While free parking obviously makes the shopping experience cheaper for the general public, there are other advantages too.
“Shoppers will also be more relaxed about spending longer in town, free from the inconvenience of clock-watching and worrying that their car parking ticket has expired. An increase in the total number of shoppers, together with additional shoppers spending more time in town, can only be good news for hard-pressed traders” said Cllr Joe Leahy, who was instrumental in negotiating the package at last year’s Council Budget preparations.
While parking charges continue to apply to on-street parking on Saturdays in December, the move by Clonmel Borough Council to waive charges in public car parks on December weekends will be of great benefit to both businesses and shoppers alike in the run-up to Christmas, he said.
