Clonmel councillor says shop local for Christmas

Clonmel councillor Joe Leahy is urging people to support their local town and businesses when shopping for Christmas.

“Christmas is a crucial time in the retail and hospitality sectors. Many small-to-medium sized businesses depend on a good Christmas turnover to see them through some of the leaner months” said Clonmel Borough Councillor Joe Leahy, who is known for his sustained and vocal campaign to promote and support Clonmel town centre.

“Local businesses are feeling the pinch more than ever and any support given to them would benefit the whole area,” he said.

Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses and service providers. “This preserves jobs in the area and strengthens the local economy” says Cllr Leahy.

“Shopping locally brings benefits to the whole community”.

With Clonmel Borough Council offering free parking in Borough Council car parks on each Saturday in December, Cllr Leahy is hoping that Christmas 2013 will be a busy one for Clonmel businesses.

“We have a great variety of shops here in Clonmel, offering fantastic choice to the local consumer,” he continued, “I would urge

everyone to stay local, shop local and support local businesses this Christmas”.
