On Wednesday, April 9, the nationwide Job Shadow Day took place giving hundreds of people with disabilities the opportunity to shadow a workplace mentor as they went about a normal working day.
“Job Shadow Day is designed to give people with disabilities the unique opportunity to get a close up look at the world of work for one week in April each year to discover and learn about the skills and education required to compete and succeed in the work place,” explained Job Coach Tim Carey, who sources work experience and part time jobs for people with disabilities.
In Tipperary town two employers supported the concept: Byrnes Spar shop and Kissane’s Tipperary Pharmacy, giving Danielle Mooney and Sarah English from Moorehaven Centre, Tipperary town, the opportunity to experience a real work environment. In return both employers received a highly motivated worker who demonstrated precise skills to complete all tasks assigned to them,” said Job Coach Tim Carey. Shane Kelly, Kissane’s Tipperary Pharmacy, is also the Chairperson of the Tipperary Town Chamber of Commerce and said he would recommend other employers in Tipp Town to participate in this scheme.
Sarah English worked in the canteen at Moorehaven before starting two hours a week for eight weeks in Byrnes Spar deli counter. “What I most enjoy about working here is the company of the girls and having a bit of craic,” said Sarah. Tommy Byrnes added that Sarah has been a great addition to the team.
Derry McMahon, General Manager of the Moorehaven Centre is very happy with the Job Shadow scheme. “I would like to express a big thank you to both employers and participants who part-took in this event.”
Other employers in Tipperary Town who have found this programme successful are Dunnes Stores, Tescos and Pearses Great Gas Petrol station.
