Aldi ‘not for Indaville’ - Wood
The planning application lodged by ALDI seeking permission to develop a retail unit with ancilliary services at Indaville, Boherclough, Cashel, will have to be considered, not alone on its significant physical impact on such a sensitive site, but also on the adverse impact it would have on existing retail outlets in the town, according to Cllr Tom Wood.
He says: “The introduction of yet another major retail outlet to our town in these recessionary times would have serious adverse consequences for existing jobs with the possible closure of some outlets. Retail strategy is not simply about building more and more shopping outlets so we must have a balanced approach and give some protection to those already in operation and to the jobs they provide. With our population stagnant and peoples spending power limited, retailers are already under severe pressure so our planners must take a practical and commonsense approach unless they want to see the shutters going down on more premises.”
In relation to the proposed site he says: ”Indaville house, a one-storey, over-basement Regency style dwelling dating from around 1820 is on the Register of Protected Structures. It stands on a grassy site, an idyllic green space complimented by protected trees and upstanding sections of the old Cashel City Wall, a designated national monument. Below-ground sections of the 14th century wall also exist so in my humble opinion the proposed development at any rate is inappropriate in that location”.
