Broadband boost for Tipperary

Tipperary TD Noel Coonan has welcomed this week’s announcement by eircom of an increase to its planned national fibre footprint in County Tipperary.

Forty three areas in Tipperary are set to get fibre broadband speeds of up to 100Mbs by 2016.

“Eircom has informed me of 43 communities that will have access to fibre broadband speeds of up to 100Mbs.

Some of these areas include Ardfinnan, Nenagh, Donohill, Templemore and Holycross. This is a crucial development in making necessary high speed broadband available to many homes and businesses,” explained Deputy Coonan.

“Nationally this announcement will increase eircom’s planned national fibre footprint from 1.2 million homes and businesses to 1.4 million homes and businesses across Ireland. By July 2016, 70% of the country will have access to fibre broadband speeds.

Deputy Coonan continued: “There will unfortunately be rural areas outside of this planned rollout who cannot benefit because they are too far from exchanges but this announcement is still a positive step forward. The Government’s National Broadband Plan aims to provide broadband to those same rural areas. I will continue to pursue high speed broadband for as many Tipperary communities as possible.”
