Cahir hosts apple and cider festival this weekend
The Slow Food Apple and Craft Cider Festival, based around the Apple Farm in Moorstown and the town of Cahir, takes place this weekend.
The festival has something of interest for everyone with food, drink, horticulture, cookery demonstrations, music, farm tours and plenty to occupy the whole family.
The highlight of the weekend is the festival Slow Food dinner at Cahir House Hotel on Saturday night. There will be seven courses in all and the apple will feature throughout.
Paul Deegan from Slow Food got a sneak preview of the menu: “I went with Con Traas from the Apple Farm to see how the menu was coming along and to try some of the courses. There was a film crew from ITV with us so there wasn’t anywhere to hide if the menu wasn’t up to par. There was no need for concern. It is going to be really special, and with all the produce coming from within 50 miles, a real Slow Food affair. At €40 per head with drinks included I think it is also amazing value”.
Saturday is very much a day for all the family. Seamus Sheridan from Sheridan’s Cheesemongers will be on hand to help with matching cheese and cider and there will be food-matching demos from local chefs.
Dick Keating from Clogheen will be demonstrating how easy it is to make cider. There will be a juice bar and a family barbecue, featuring a spit-roast pig and tapíní; that’s tapas Irish style, with smaller, cheaper portions of food so that people can try lots of things. There will be live music in keeping with a festival atmosphere and the Orchard Special will give the kids train rides around the farm.
All the activities will be under cover so rain or shine it will be a great day out.
Sunday is Irish Seed Savers’ Apple Day and for anyone with an interest in growing apples, in learning about the amazing Irish apple varieties or in horticulture in general this is a wonderful opportunity.
Con Traas said -”This is the first time that Irish Seed Savers have run their Apple Day outside of their Scariff base and we are really fortunate to be able to host it in Tipperary.”
The food theme continues on Sunday with plenty of hot food and apple flavoured goodies and there will be some great activities for kids. All events are free of charge, except for the Slow Food dinner. Tickets are available from the Apple Farm.
