Clonmel taking the brunt of Abbott restructuring, says Fine Gael TD
Fine Gael Tipperary South Deputy Tom Hayes has said the news that 200 jobs are to go at Abbott in Clonmel is extremely regrettable and that he hopes the redundancies can be secured on a voluntary basis.
“News that 200 jobs are to go at Abbott will come as a big shock to workers and to the wider Clonmel community. The reason given by the company for the job losses relates to staying competitive in an increasingly challenging global environment.
“I am glad to learn however that the company remains committed to the Clonmel facility, which it says is strategically important to Abbott’s operations.
“Abbott has been a fantastic employer not only in Clonmel but across Ireland. As one of Ireland’s largest healthcare companies, it is top of its game in terms of innovation and the development of world class medical products.
“Losing a job is always difficult, but worse still in today’s economic environment. The Government has been working diligently to stem the flow of unemployment and we are starting to see that the plan is working. Last year we recorded an increase in employment in the private sector for the first time in four years.
“The health and life sciences sector is one of a number of sectors that have been earmarked in the Action Plan for Jobs for future growth and development. A Health Innovation Hub and a dedicated focus on health research in manufacturing and medical devices, the areas in which Abbot operates, have been designed to drive to sector forward.
“Unfortunately, Clonmel appears to have taken the brunt of Abbott’s restructuring plan as it is the only one of the eleven Abbott locations in Ireland to be impacted by this decision.
“My thoughts are with the staff at this difficult time. Abbott is committed to supporting those affected by today’s decision through favourable redundancy terms and the provision of outplacement services. All of the relevant State supports will, of course, also be available to staff in their bid to secure alternative employment down the line.”
