Clonmel working hard to win gold

Clonmel is a hive of activity as the town prepares for the visit of the Entente Florale judges on August 3. With just over three weeks to go voluntary groups throughout the town have been working to make the judges trip a successful one.

In spite of the inclement weather, grass cutting and seasonal planting has been taking place throughout town. Clonmel Borough Council staff has also been busy working at roundabouts and approach roads to town.

Voluntary groups are playing an important role in the preparations for the day. The Willow Park Residents Association was delighted to win the recent Estates Enhancement Competition. As a result of the victory, the estate will now be included in the route for judges on the day. The Clonmel Scout Troop has also lent a hand by distributing information leaflets to over 1000 houses in the town and environs.

Clonmel’s Tidy Towns group are working around the town up to four nights a week in the final preparations for the big day. The group is keen to welcome new volunteers. Those interested can meet at the back of the AIB in the Mary Street Car Park on Tuesday and Thursday’s at 11am and 7pm.

The town centre is also awash with colour thanks to the hundreds of hanging baskets and window boxes supplied to businesses by Clonmel Borough Council.

As August 3 nears Clonmel Borough Council is urging individuals and voluntary groups to make an extra effort to help Clonmel win gold in the Entente Florale, Europe’s most prestigious horticultural and environmental competition.
