Eamon O’Shea is the new Tipperary hurling manager

The Tipperary County GAA Board has ratified the appointment of Eamon O’Shea as the new Tipperary Senior Hurling manager.

The Kilruane MacDonaghs clubman was coach under manager Liam Sheedy when Tipp won the All-Ireland two years, as well as the Munster championships in 2008 and 2009, and played a key role in the team’s development over the previous few years.

He succeeds Declan Ryan, who stepped down following the team’s hammering by Kilkenny in the All-Ireland semi-final.

The other members of O’Shea’s management team will be selected in due course and recommended to the County Board for ratification.

“Tipperary County Board is delighted that a man of Eamon’s ability and experience has agreed to take on the important and voluntary role of managing the Tipperary senior hurling team. The Board wishes him every success and assures him of their full support and encouragement as he seeks to build on the team’s many successes in the last 5 years”, the Board said in a statement.

Eamon O’Shea played senior hurling championship for Tipperary between 1979 and 1986 and also played senior inter-county championship hurling with Dublin. He won Munster and All-Ireland minor hurling championships with Tipperary in 1976, Munster and All-Ireland U-21 hurling championships in 1979, a Munster U-21 hurling championship in 1978 and a National Hurling League title in 1979.

He won four County Senior Hurling championships with Kilruane MacDonaghs and won an All-Ireland club title with them in the 1985/86 season.

Eamon resides in Galway, where he is head of the Economics discipline at NUIG, and is an active member of the Salthill/Knocknacarra GAA club.
