Medite Europe Ltd., which is part of Coillte Panel Products, launched an Energy Awareness Campaign ‘The Power is You’.

Friday, 20th January was another significant milestone in Medite’s ongoing strategy to reduce energy consumption across all activities onsite. The event was officially inaugurated by Coillte CEO David Gunning, with many local dignitaries in attendance.

The large attendance enjoyed the many exhibitor stands and took part in a range of fun activities based around the theme of energy efficiency. Prizes were presented to the winners of the children’s art calendar competition and the winner of the name the campaign slogan.

Medite Europe is the manufacturer of Medite, the leading European brand of Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF). From its production and research plant in Clonmel the company supplies a wide range of MDF products to meet the needs of a diverse range of customers across Europe and beyond.

Since first starting production back in 1983, Medite has been constantly striving to identify and implement initiatives to improve energy efficiency. To date in excess of €60m has been invested on implementing new technologies to reduce energy consumption.

The process of manufacturing Medite MDF requires significant amounts of energy from different sources to chip the logs, refine the chips to fibre, then to dry the wood fibres to produce panels.

The heat energy required is generated from Biomass, Electricity and Gas. Medite and its sister company SmartPly, based in Waterford, combined are the largest biomass consumers in Ireland.

For this reason the efficient use of energy is paramount in managing cost and to maintain competitiveness in the international markets that Medite competes in.
