Hayes welcomes EU deal that guarantees CAP budget

Local Fine Gael TD, Tom Hayes, has welcomed the deal on the EU Budget which guarantees over €1.5 billion per year for Irish farmers from the Common Agriculture Policy (CAP).

“This deal follows strong negotiations by the Government to defend Ireland’s agriculture funding. The deal ensures that direct payments to farmers are protected which is hugely important for Tipperary farmers. With the funding secured, the Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney TD, is now tasked with negotiating a new CAP deal under the Irish Presidency.

“I am delighted that Irish farmer’s direct payments are protected in this deal. These vital payments directly support farm incomes and with farmers spending locally, this is beneficial to towns and villages across County Tipperary. Farmers are the lifeblood of the rural economy supporting businesses and sustaining jobs throughout rural Ireland.

“The Taoiseach successfully negotiated an extra €100 million for rural development. This money will be matched by the Irish Government and will support the aims and targets set down under Food Harvest 2020. EU funding to Ireland from CAP amounts to over €11 billion over the seven year period 2014-2020.

“The EU budget deal guarantees direct payments for farmers in the years ahead. I am confident of the huge potential for growth in the agri-food sector which will boost the economy and deliver much needed employment in Tipperary.
