Ireland ploughing team star in Croatia
There was a gresat boost for the Irish competitive ploughing community in advance of this wee’s National Ploughign Championships when national representatives Eamonn Tracey, Carlow, and Jer Coakley, Roscarberry, starred in their competitive classes at the World Ploughing Contest in Croatia
Seasoned ploughman Eamonn Tracey, represented Ireland for the seventh time this year has won the Silver rose bowl as second overall in the world.
He ploughed on Friday, September 14, in Stubble, coming third, and was also placed third on Saturday, September 15, in Grassland.
Scotland took team gold, Ireland silver and Wales bronze.
For 24 year old Jer Coakley, from Roscarberry, it was his first time to represent Ireland in the World Ploughing Contest – and what an achievement to be named the 2012 ‘Best Newcomer in Reversible Ploughing’ with ninth place in the world overall.
Jer, the youngest competitor the NPA have ever sent to the contest has a very accomplished record having won the Under 21 All-Ireland in 2006 in Conventional Ploughing, then winning the Under-28 All Ireland in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011. Such is the standard of this young ploughman that he went ahead in 2011 to win the Senior Reversible Contest to qualify for the world contest this year. Jer was also runner-up in the European Reversible Ploughing Contest in 2011 which was another huge achievement. Jer’s father Gerry Coakley also ploughed at World Level to represent his country on three occasions.
