Pilot project hopes to bring Rock visitors into Cashel town centre

Each year, a significant number of people visit the Rock of Cashel. Whilst this is very welcome there is a sense that only a small proportion of these visitors get to experience all the beautiful town of Cashel has to offer. A new pilot project is now being put in place to see what can be done to change this situation, and introduce the lovely town area to the many foreign and Irish visitors who pass through the town each year.
South Tipperary Development Company is now piloting this project through its Tús Programme in collaboration with Cashel Chamber of Commerce and Cashel Heritage Centre. The project is based around having a person in place at the Rock, meeting and greeting visitors, providing them with information and encouraging them to venture further down into the town.
An email address Cashelwhatson@gmail.com has been set up for daily use by traders and the community to inform the project of anything that’s happening that would be of interest to a visitor to the town on any regular day of the week – from the St. Patricks Brass Band practising on the Plaza to a good hurling match in the field, a music gig in the pub, an exhibition in Halla na Feile or even the style on the Plaza on the evening of the Debs!
Through the generosity of Breda Stroms, of Mikey Ryan’s, the project has been given a traditional ‘Butchers’ Bicycle’ which has been restored by STDC with the help of Patrick McInerney. This will provide a very visible and attractive focal point for the project at the Rock on which to display promotional material for any event in town, commercial, sporting or social.
Monies for the restoration of the bicycle were donated by the Brian Boru and a number of other traders in Cashel.
There is already great energy and enthusiasm for this project in the town and STDC hope that this will grow over the coming weeks. Each and every trader in the town is invited to be part of the project which will promote Cashel. As this is a pilot project it will be monitored and evaluated. South Tipperary Development Company will be keeping in touch with the community and the traders for their support, feedback and constructive suggestions to make the pilot as successful as possible. If successful, there is no reason at this moment in time why the project could not be continued into the future and expanded upon.
