Protected bridge must be repaired
Sinn Féin spokesperson, Kevin Brunnick has called on South Tipperary County Council to undertake repair works to the stonework on the bridge in Cahir. Several stones have fallen out of the walls of the bridge, which is considered a protected structure by South Tipperary County Council.
According to Mr. Brunnick: “At last count, 16 stones have fallen from the walls of the bridge and are gone. These are cut stones and not easily replaced. The bridge is a historic monument in its own right and deserves to be maintained. The Council themselves have placed it on their Record of Protected Structures and there is an onus on them not to allow the bridge fall into further disrepair.”
Commenting on the possible causes of the damage to the bridge, Mr. Brunnick went on to say, “The single biggest issue is a lack of maintenance. The vibration of heavy traffic and the civil engineering works to bring a gas main across the bridge didn’t help the situation, but with proper maintenance there would be no reason for the bridge to be damaged. I have raised the issue with the County Council and they have pointed to the funding issues that they are having generally as a reason for not carrying out repairs. But this is a false economy; a small investment in repair works now will prevent a much larger expense in the future when the bridge deteriorates further.”
