Shronell’s Seamus O’Grady wins primary schools tyre contest

Twelve year old Seamus O’Grady a 6th class pupil at Shronell National School, Lattin, has been announced as joint winner of the inaugural TRACS Primary Schools Tyre Waste Management Competition.
Seamus won €500 for himself as well as €500 for his school’s library fund.
TRACS (Tyre Recovery Activity Compliance Scheme) is a non profit, voluntary compliance scheme for tyre industry operators which is supported by the Irish Tyre Industry and approved by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government.
As Ireland’s first tyre compliance scheme, it was introduced in January 2008 following 2007 Waste Management Regulations obliging holders of waste tyres to deal only with reputable contractors.
Towards the end of 2012, TRACS asked primary school students to think about the best uses for used tyres and to tell the story of their family car tyre in a second life as a reused, recycled, crumbed or re-treaded tyre.
The competition was open to 4th, 5th and 6th class pupils. Children were allowed to submit their entry either as an illustration or as an essay and one winner was picked in each category.
Seamus O’ Grady’s winning entry depicted the many different ways in which tyres can be used, once they come to the end of their life cycle.
Director of TRACS, commented, “Over the past few years, TRACS members have been changing attitudes in the way that the industry manages its tyre waste.
“It is important that children learn about environmental challenges and think about how they might tackle them with innovative solutions in the future.
“Encouraging critical thinking and problem solving at this young age will direct children to ponder making the best use of their resources and managing their environment into the future.”
Ms. Frankie Franklin, principal of Shronell National School added, “Seamus is extremely artistically talented and this has been recognised by TRACS in his pictorial representation of a variety of uses of recycled tyres.
“He worked meticiously on his entry and this dedication has paid off.
“I hope he continues to develop this talent in secondary school.
“It is a wonderful prize and the donation to our school library is much appreciated.”
