South Tipperary ICA leader at European conference on vulnerable families

South Tipperary ICA Federation President Mrs. Peggy O’Brien attended the high level conference on Vulnerable Families – What can Europe do? – which was held recently in Dublin Castle under the joint umbrella of ICA and COFACE (Confederation of Family Organisations in the EU).

Ms Liz Wall, President of ICA and Annemie Drieskens, President, COFACE welcomed the delegates. The Conference was chaired by Senator Jillian van Turnhout, Leader of the Independent Group.

Keynote Speakers were Frances Fitzgerald, Minister for Children and Youth Affairs; Juan Menendez-Valdeis, Director of Eurofound; and Julius op de Beke, DG EMPL, European Commission

Various aspects of vulnerability were discussed:- vulnerability due to ill health, mental health issues, disability, care; extreme vulnerability, families outside of the reach of services; vulnerability due to joblessness and lack of skills; and parenting support services

Speaking after the conference, Mrs. O’Brien said she was proud to have been there. ICA is the only Irish Member of the Confederation of Family Organisations of the European Union (COFACE).

Founded in 1958 it has been linking family organisations together from all over Europe to discuss and work on issues such as balancing work and family life, children’s well-being, solidarity between generations, migrant families, disabled and dependent persons, gender equality, education, parenting, health issues and consumer affairs.

ICA is also affiliated to the Associated Countrywomen of the World. The organisation represents nine million women through its 450 member societies in over 70 countries.
