The Nationalist marks Local Newspaper Week - Mayor of Clonmel pays special tribute to the paper
Marking Local Newspaper Week in Clonmel at a coffee morning in Hearns Hotell, were Michael Heverin, Editor, The Nationalist; Eimear McDonnell, Advertising Manager; Cllr Billy Shoer, Mayor of Clonmel; and Brendan O'Keeffe, representing South Tipperary Hospice Support Group who benefited from a collection held in association with the event.
The Nationalist celebrated Local Newspaper Week with a coffee morning in Hearns Hotel, Clonmel on Wednesday morning.
Editor Michael Heverin and Advertising Manager Eimear McDonnell welcomed guests and explained the rationale behind the second annual Local Newspaper Week which puts the focus on local newspapers throughout the country.
Among those present were Mayor of Clonmel, Cllr Billy Shoer, and South Tipperary County Council chairman, Cllr John Crosse, who both paid tribute to the role of local newspapers in the community, singling out The Nationalist and its sister publication, South Tipp Tody, for special praise.
Mayor Shoer said the two papers played a vital role in keeping readers informed of everything happening in the county.
He also paid tribute to the role they played in supporting worthwhile projects and all community groups in the town and county.
“The Nationalist and South Tipp Today give so many groups and voluntary organisations the publicity they need to survive and on behalf of the people of Clonmel I want to thank them for that. They are at the heart of the local community”.
Those sentiments were echoed by Brendan O’Keefffe, who represented South Tipperary Hospice Support Movement at the event - a collection was held during the coffee morning in aid of Hospice.
“I would like to thank The Nationalist for the great support they give in supporting our fundraising efforts and publishing photographs of the cheque presentations to us. It is a vital source of publicity for us”, Mr O’Keeffe said.
Editor Michael Heverin said The Nationalist was proud to have played such a key role in the life and times of South Tipperary for more than 120 years and he looked forward to that continiuing well into the future.
The two papers were now multi-platform media operations, with the websites - www.nationalist.ie and www.southtipptoday.ie - playing an expanding and ever-increasing role, with full use also of social media such as Twitter and Facebook.
He asked people to read the special supplement provided free with this week’s paper which gives an insight into the role of the regional press throughout Ireland.
“Our key strength is our local appeal - and as the motto for this week proclaims, we are trusted 24/7.
