There is great sadness in Tipperary at the death of adventurer Ian McKeever who had such a close association with people in the county.
Mr McKeever died in an accident while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
He was involved with many Tipperary expeditions to the mountain in recent years, especially with students whom he encouraged to test their endurance.
Among them was a group of VEC students from the county and Mr McKeever attended last year’s annual VEC awards ceremony in Clonmel.
He also visited many schools, among them Clonmel High School
He spoke to senior students about his achievements and how having clear goals and determination can help one to reach any summit.
Ian became the first person to hold both records for the seven main mountain summits simultaneously and also had the honour of completing the fastest ever eight summits. He has also completed numerous other challenges for charity over the last ten years.
His presentation to the students was inspiring and appropriate for the Sixth Years in particular, as they faced a challenging year.
His message of the importance of knowing what you want to achieve and then striving to get there through hard work and determination was timely for the students.
A school spokesman said it was great to hear from someone hugely positive about living and what can be achieved if you go about it the right way.
