Weather alert as heavy rain may lead to flooding in Munster
Met Eireann has issued warnings for snow and ice for counties Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal and rainfall warnings are in place for Munster, Connaught and Leinster.
Rain may give rise to spot flooding in parts of Munster and Leinster. The rain will die out in Munster this evening. Gale force east winds will ease in the south also later.
Across the country, roads remain extremely wet and traffic on the M11 and M50 has been affected. The public are advised to heed the advice of Gardai and local authorities regarding road closures and diversions and to listen to news updates for the latest advice.
The Department advises road users to take care on the roads and to pay particular attention to pedestrians and cyclists during the inclement weather. The public are reminded to monitor weather broadcasts when travelling and heed the advice of the RSA on road use during severe weather and high winds.
The RSA has issued the following advice: When driving in wet and windy conditions drivers are reminded that;
It takes longer to stop a vehicle on wet roads so slow down and allow extra distance between you and the vehicle in front.
Watch out for falling/fallen debris on the road and vehicles veering across the road
Control of a vehicle may be affected by strong cross winds. High sided vehicles and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable to strong winds
Take special care when driving behind goods vehicles as they generate a considerable amount of spray which reduces your visibility
Allow extra space between you and vulnerable road users such as cyclists and motorcyclists
Drive with dipped headlights at all times
Be aware of the danger of aquaplaning especially on roads with 100 km/h and 120 km/h roads.
Check tyres and consider replacing them if the thread depth is below 3mm
Severe weather such as this brings not only high winds, but the risk of heavy downpours and the potential for spot flooding.
