Cahir Colaiste students don’t take eyesight for granted
Losing your sight doesn’t mean you can’t achieve your dreams, the students of Colaiste Dun Iascaigh learned, last week.
On Wednesday, October 3, last, the organisation ‘Fighting Blindness’ came to the school to give a better idea of how they work to help impaired vision.
A lovely woman called Áine May lost her vision completely due to RP (Retinitis Pigmentosa) five years ago in 2005. RP can happen to anyone of any age.
Áine May showed the students how everyone takes the use of their vision for granted.
The students asked Áine if she could what one thing she could see, she told us she would watch the sunset and how she wishes she had watched it more while she had the chance.
Although Áine is now completely blind she has a real spark of positivity and has a great attitude towards life.
Blindness has not prevented Áine from living her dreams, as she said: “When I was back in secondary, my one dream was to be a radio presenter and broadcaster”.
Now at 28 years of age she is working full time as a presenter for various top radio stations throughout the country, such as 2FM and Beat102-103.
Áine left students with a new view of life and made them all aware of how valuable each day is and told them to live it to the full. Áine uses voice technology to live her life and does not let any hurdle get in her way.
Catherine, a representative of Fighting Blindness, and Michael, her colleague, explained what the organisation can do in order to help people who have impaired vision.
Mary told those gathered all about the support that is available and how there are counsellors and guides to support and help those in order to make their life more comfortable.
