An anti-smoking campaign designed for primary school students by Cashel’s Neighbourhood Youth Project could be rolled out to primary schools in the near future.
The education programme ‘Lungs on the Run’ has been trialled successfully with local children, and is now set to be showcased in Dublin.
Tipperary Regional Youth Service received money from the X-Hale Youth Awards Grant scheme, through the Irish Cancer Society, earlier in the year. This money was granted to Cashel Neighbourhood Youth Project to develop an anti smoking campaign. Members of the youth project decided to create a programme for primary school students which would be peer lead. They spent the summer holidays creating an animation, a workbook and a programme which would be carried out in the schools.
This group ran a pilot of the programme they created last Thursday, October 4, with a group of sixth class girls in St. John the Baptist Primary school, in order to see if any changes need to be made. Four senior members of the youth project ran the programme with the girls and it was a great success, with all the girls pledging not to smoke.
Cashel Neighbourhood Youth Project would like to thank the principal, teachers and students of St. John the Baptist Girls Primary school for their support and assistance with this project.
The youth project will be showcasing their programme in Dublin on October 30 and they hope to be able to run this programme on a yearly basis in primary schools.
