Evan’s Doodle 4 Google needs your vote to win competition!

A budding artist from Clerihan is in the running to win a E10,000 technology grant for his school as he has been named among the finalists in this year’s national ‘Doodle 4 Google’ art competition.
Eight-year-old Evan Kiely, who is in second class, was delighted when a letter arrived at the school last week to say his colourful drawing is in the top 15 pictures in the first and second class category of this prestigious competition.
Now a public vote will determine who the top winners will be and Evan needs your support!
There is great excitement in the school and young Evan, the son of Eoin and Valerie Kiely who live in Clerihan village, is like their very own celebrity at the moment!
Doodle 4 Google is a competition open to all students attending primary or secondary schools in Ireland, and has been running since 2008.
The online search website asked students to create their own Google doodle, a feature of the website’s homepage. This year’s theme for the doodles is “My invention…”
Evan’s inspiration was his favourite invention - aeroplanes and hot air balloons. In his entry Evan says they are his favourite invention because they are fun and allow you to travel all over the world. He titled the picture ‘I want to fly.’
Students from Clerihan NS have entered the competition before but this is the first time the school features in the final line up. The school first runs an internal competition, because there is a limit on how many entries can be submitted to Google.
Evan was one of three chosen, in what teacher Denise said was a very hard choice because all the artists in the school are so good.
The pictures were sent off before Christmas and then the long wait until last week to hear if Evan had made the final 75. There are just 15 pictures in his age category, 75 on the overall finalists list.
“The whole school is very excited.
“All the parents, teachers and staff are behind Evan, we’re all contacting neighbours and friends to vote!” Denise told The Nationalist.
“It’s great to have some positivity.
“Maths would be Evan’s favourite subject, he’s a good student and works hard in school, we’re all very proud of him,” his teacher added.
If Evan wins his class group category his prize will be a Chromebook (laptop computer).
The overall winner will receive a E10,000 technology grant for their school, a E5,000 college scholarship and their doodle will appear on the Google homepage for a day in April.

Other Tipperary based finalists, in some of the other age group categories are Amy Q from Knockavilla NS, Lauren F from Shronell NS, in the junior and senior infants category; and in the TYO, fifth year, sixth year and youthreach category is Gabriela P from the Presentation Secondary School in Tipperary.
