Tipperary Town open for business - a warm welcome awaits

Tipperary Town is a town with an historic past and a strong economic future, a town that has always boxed above its weight, with a population with a very strong “can do” attitude. With such unique community based projects such as the Canon Hayes Recreational Centre and the Excel theatre and cinema complex, Tipperary Town has so much to offer both its citizens and visitors alike. The sporting prowess of the town and its hinterland is well know with award winning GAA, rugby, soccer and three 18 hole golf courses all within minutes of the town. Looking to the past this year is a very significant year as it marks the centenary of the penning of the world famous “It’s a long way to Tipperary” song, a milestone which will be celebrated in some style in Tipperary Town.

It is the hope of Tipperary Integrated Resource Development/ Chamber of Commerce to celebrate this by organising and co-ordinating a series of events. TIRD/CC is a voluntary body comprising of business people and community groups working together and in conjuction with statutory bodies for the betterment of the town, its people and its environs.

TIRD/CC believes that this occasion gives Tipperary Town a unique opportunity to celebrate the song known and loved all over the world. The song, which became famous through its use in the First World War 1914-1918, has steadily become one of the most iconic Irish songs to date. It also gives Tipperary Town the opportunity to mark its claim on this iconic song on a large public stage.

The familiarity worldwide of the song and the little town in the south of Ireland, to which it refers means the centenary of ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’ is sure to have national and international appeal. It is believed that this occasion will open up a new opportunity for Tipperary Town to explore and promote its influence on the song and association with WW1 events. It is an occasion to celebrate the rich culture and beauty of the town surrounded by the panoramic views of the Glen of Aherlow.

The centenary now also encompasses Tipperary Peace Awards from Thursday 5th to Sat 7th of July when former President of Ireland Mary McAleese will receive the Peace award in Tipperary, followed by the Peace Forum and Song of Peace.

The suggested format of events is for the main celebrations to take place Saturday 7th July 2012 to 14th July 2012 with the grand finale taking

place on Saturday 14th July, which will include a large number of visiting brass bands performing on the Main Street. They will congregate in Tipperary Town performing in various locations from 11am.

Throughout Friday 13th and Saturday 14th a ‘Tipperary Tea Party’ will also be held as a family day with people dressed in vintage clothes and the town centre with only vintage cars, Pony and traps, bicycles etc. Recreating Tipperary 100 years ago! We hope local groups will help with the running of this event, marquees will be erected so we are not depending on the weather and refreshments will be provided to visiting bands. Many volunteers will be needed to co-ordinate and help with events both on the day and before.

The roads into Tipperary Town will be closed off at the Bansha road and the top of the Limerick road. Vintage transport will only be allowed through the town. At a set appointed time all Brass Bands collectively will perform ‘Its along way to Tipperary’. Then there will be the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.

Additional events throughout the week will include free family friendly street entertainment. Daltons Heritage Shop, New Tipperary will be open for tours and as a working shop

A food fair with Tipperary produce.

A lecture series and exhibition of historical memorabilia

A Good Ole Days type concert.

If you can see the potential that the centenary has and you would like to take part in any way please let us know. All feedback is most welcome and support greatly appreciated. If people have any additional ideas or suggestions we would be more than delighted to hear from

you (contact us at 3 James St., Tipperary Tel. 062 31244)

This is a major event but by no means the only project that TIRD/CC are involved in. In the last 12 months the committee have been very active in:

Sourcing funding through Tipperary Development Co. and Tipperay Town Council for the very impressive Victorian street lighting which now adorn the Main Street.

Having great satisfaction in seeing the sod turned on Rosanna road for the new Dept. of Justice offices, a project that TIRD/CC works for over 10 years on with the able assistance of Tipperary Town Council.

The Christmas lights are now among the best in the country for a town of our size and in 2011 they aware combined with a hugely successful shop local promotion where €5000 of cash shopping vouchers were won by local consumers.

TIRD/CC is involved in on going discussions and planning with the NRA and Tipperary SR County Council regarding the realighment of the N24 and subsequent town bypass.
