In 1944, almost 70 years ago to the day, Matt Barlow set up Barlo Engineering (Clonmel Engineering Works) in Emmet Street, Clonmel. Matt Barlow’s dream was to build a business that would be passed from generation to generation and 70 years on his dream is still being realised.

Starting out as Barlo Engineering (Clonmel Engineering Works) the company’s first major achievement came in 1948 when they were appointed Main Distributors for David Brown tractors and Claas combine harvesters. This contract meant that they were the sole distributors for counties Tipperary, Kilkenny and Waterford for David Brown and Class.

Business kept going from strength to strength
during the 1960s and 1970s, and in 1978 , the newly named Barlo Farm Machinery moved its Clonmel premises to a brand new facility which was opened by Mr Jim Gibbons, the then Minister for Agriculture.

A new generation of the Barlow family were coming through and in 1989 Barlo Motors was appointed as Main Ford dealer for South Tipperary. Sadness came in 2002 when Dealer Principal Ray Barlow passed away after a short illness. The company re-grouped and Alan and Ivan Barlow came to the helm and this is still how things are today.

Over the past 70 years the Barlo Motor Group has expanded and changed considerably. No longer in the tractor trade the main focus of the group is now the motor trade. With five franchises across three locations and 55 staff, Barlo Motor Group is now a company that Matt and Sean Barlow could be proud of.

Sean Barlow’s motto from day one was “Treat your customer the way you would like to be treated yourself” and this has worked well for Barlo Motor Group as they still deal with many grandchildren of original customers back in the 1940s.

“We are very proud to say that the Barlow family are now celebrating their 70th year of business in Clonmel. Over that 70 years the main ethos of our business was ensuring that we went above and beyond in looking after our customers. These levels of great customer care wouldn’t have been achieved without the dedicated and hardworking employees of Barlo Motor Group.”

To celebrate the company’s 70th anniversary Barlo Motor Group have a unique offer of an additional €700 off 70 cars for 7 days. Visit www.barlomotorgroup.ie for more information or call into any of the dealerships in Clonmel, Thurles or Kilkenny. Limited offer for 7 days only starting Friday, September 12.
