West U. 12 C Hurling Final

In a game that made mockery of its “C” grading, both Kickams and Cashel played out a highly entertaining draw in Golden on Monday night last.

The second half was played under fading light with Golden’s floodlights called into action. A call for extra time was sensibly not entertained so both clubs will have to do it all again. The first half was close and a Michael O’Meara free opened his side’s account. Kickams soon levelled but Daniel Moloney scored from a tight angle to restore the lead. The exchanges were committed and fair with every ball hard fought for. A Kickams sixty-five again levelled the game and soon we found ourselves a point behind with another Kickams free on target. Evan Hynes who was busy all night managed a good point to keep Cashel in the hunt. But Kickams regained scoring dominance right on halftime with a point, 0-3 to 0-4.

Cashel started the second half in good style with Conor O’Dwyer and Gabriel Pereira covering every blade of grass on the Golden pitch. A Daniel Moloney free close in tied the game and Moloney soon added another to hand Cashel a one-point cushion 0-5 to 0-4. The pressure was now on Kickams as Cashel were on top and gunning for victory. A fine piece of skill from Evan Hynes saw him put the sliother into space with a neat flick; he raced after it and fired a brilliant groundstroke to the net for a brilliant goal. The momentum was now firmly with Cashel. The excellent Conor O’Dwyer then got in on the act, collecting the ball and turning inside the Kickams defence to score on his left with a point, big advantage Cashel, 1-6 to 0-4 and ten minutes left to play. The fading light was a worry but the show had to go on. And it was the final ten minutes that saw Kickams play their best hurling. A bullet of a goal for Kickams followed quickly by A Daniel Moloney free made it a three-point game with time running out. The excitement levels were high but Kickams were forcing the pace. A speculative low shot found its way to the Cashel net and the sides were level once again. A Kickams free in front of goal was converted soon after and Cashel were staring at a sickening defeat. Would there be one last attack, there was, the ball was moved quickly in the heart of the Kickams defence, Jack McGrath was quickest to react, gathered and cool as a breeze slotted the ball between the posts to ensure Cashel would survive for another day. Final score Cashel KC 1-8 Kickams 2-5.

Both teams should be complimented on an outstanding game of hurling which had everything. Lets hope the replay provides some of the same. At the time of writing the replay is down for this Wednesday evening at 6pm in Golden again check with club officers for details. Well done to the lads on their brilliant displays all over the pitch. A fantastic team effort.

West U.14 “A” Hurling Final

Cashel’s impressive U.14s easily disposed of Kickams at a rain sodden New Inn last week to book an eagerly awaited final with Clonoulty this coming Thursday. To be fair Cashel were out of sight at half time racking up and impressive, 4-7 to Kickams two points. The second half aided by the breeze Cashel added three more goals to add to Kickams to close out an impressive win.

The players and selector will know that in Clonoulty they face a different opposition. The League final some weeks back proved to be a cracker with very little separating the sides. But more importantly this Cashel Panel and mentors will cast their minds back to their U.12 days when Cashel were cruelly denied by Clonoulty in the West Final after a replay by just a point, those memories should be the benchmark for success as the team no doubt will give it their all on the night. We wish the selectors and players the very best and hope a strong Cashel support makes their way to Dundrum.
