Minors - Clonmel Commercials 3-13 Newport Gaels 1-8

The minors were forced to battle hard to get the upper hand on the North Champions in Saturday’s county semi-final at Holycross.  A sluggish opening from Commercials saw Newport gain an early advantage and they led by two points after four minutes. Commercials were back on level terms after ten minutes but already Jake McDonald had three saves made in the Commercials goal. Two points in as many minutes from Pauraic Looram and Paudie White pushed Commercials into the lead and they were now beginning to find their range and play with some fluency.  A point for Newport in the 14th minute was followed by four unanswered points from play by Commercials and suddenly there was daylight between the sides.  Newport narrowed the margin to four with just a minute to the break.  A pass from Kevin Fahey was excellently caught on the 40 by Michael Nugent.  The corner forward turned and passed to Paudie White, who returned the ball to Nugent.  There was but one thought on his mind and his blazing shot gave the keeper no chance.

Commercials opened the second half brightly with two early points and now enjoyed a nine point cushion.  Newport were not about to pack their bags though and by the eighth minute they had reduced the margin to just four points with a goal and a point in a minute.  Commercials quickly responded and soon put the game beyond Newport.  A goal and three points without response was enough to secure the county final spot.  The goal came from Michael Connolly in the 15th minute and effectively killed the game as a contest.  Commercials saw out the final quarter and Pauraic Looram’s goal put the icing on the cake as thoughts began to turn towards the county final against Drom in the coming weeks.
