Cahir 1-10 Ardfinnan 0-10

Cahir recorded a 3 point victory over close rivals and neighbours Ardfinnan in this closely contested Clonmel Oil Senior Football second round tie played in sunny conditions on Sunday last.

Like all games between this sides this was a keenly contested game with the decisive score being Paddy O’Flaherty’s goal mid way through the second half at a stage when the losers had reduced the margin to a point playing with the breeze.

Cahir who lined without their leading marksman Benny Hickey started with the aid of a stiff breeze but it was Ardfinnan who opened the scoring with a Brian Lonergan free.

Cahir quickly replied with an Ed Meehan point and took the lead with a Padraig Whelan free. Billy Hewitt equalised on 10 minutes. Both sides were finding scores hard to come by, Cahir then hit 4 in a row between the 18 and 25 minutes through a Michael Hickey free, Robbie Costigan 2 and Paul McEvoy.

Ardfinnan replied with a Brian Lonergan free and a find individual point from Peter Hally. Cahir’s Michael Hickey had the last score of the half from a free to leave the half-time score Cahir 0-7 Ardfinnan 0-4.

Cahir now facing the breeze started the better and twice came close to the opening goal but it was Ardfinnan‘s Brian Lonergan who opened the scoring from a free. Brian McEvoy restored Cahir’s advantage with a fisted effort after the Ardfinnan defence struggled to clear.

Ardfinnan’s Brian Lonergan reduced the margin to the minimum with 2 points, one a free. Ardfinnan now seemed to be gaining the upper hand but on 17 minutes all changed when Paddy O’Flaherty’s effort from the left wing was adjudged to have crossed the line before the defence cleared.

Ardfinnan responded to this setback with the next 3 points, two Brian Lonergan frees and one from Johnny English to again to leave the minimum between the sides.

But Cahir held their nerve and late points from Paddy O’Flaherty now operating in attack and Padraig Whelan left them 1-10 to 0-10 winners .

For Cahir this was a vital win following their narrow loss to Commercials while Ardfinnan will be disappointed with this loss. but the lack of a cutting edge in attack was their downfall with the majority of their scores coming from Brian Lonergan frees.
