Golden Kilfeacle 2-7 Solohead 0-13

Golden Kilfeacle and Solohead played out an entertaining draw last Friday night in their opening game in the Rea Clarke Hennessy junior football A championship at Sean Treacy Park.

Played in windy conditions both sides will feel they could have won this but it will be Solohead who will rue the missed opportunities most of which were in a second half in which they were well on top.

Golden were out of the blocks first and had early scores from Seamus Carr and Thomas Byrnes before Solohead replied. Then Shiner Ryan made a great run through the Solohead defence before laying off to Thomas Byrnes who finished well.

Even though there was not much between the sides at this stage Golden were taking more advantage of their scoring opportunities. Just before half time impressive midfielder James Hayes made a strong run down the middle before laying off to Seamus Carr who finished it well to the net.

At half time Golden had a decent lead of 2-4 to 0-6 but it was a transformed Solohead who emerged for the second half and they dominated proceedings picking off some fine scores from play and dead balls. Golden were really struggling to put any moves together and the game seemed over when Solohead moved three clear with five minutes left.

Then came the turning point in the match. Solohead were awarded a penalty for a foul on the full forward. A point at this stage would have sealed victory for Solohead but they opted to go for goal and it was well saved by Golden keeper Malachy Scott. The ball broke up the field and Thomas Byrnes fisted over. This seemed to bring Golden back to life and they lifted their game.

Seamus Carr kicked a point with time almost up to leave one between them. Then from the resulting kick out which was won by Golden they got a free twenty yards out which was duly pointed by Sean Ryan to tie the game. Solohead will feel they should have wrapped up the game but credit also to Golden who somehow found three unlikely scores near the end to gain a point.
