There was no doubt about Kickhams’ superiority in the West Tipperary under-21 B football championship final when they defeated Galtee Rovers by 1-7 to 0-6 in the final, which was played in arctic conditions at Cappawhite on Friday evening.

The winners dominated for most of the first half and led by 0-6 to 0-1 after twenty minutes.

When Dean Thompson kicked the only goal of the game three minutes later, it put Kickhams in a controlling position.

However, the goal was the spur that aroused Galtee and they scored three points in the course of four minutes to leave the half-time score 1-6 to 0-4 in Kickhams’ favour.

Kickhams had a slight wind advantage in the second half and appeared as if they were going to run riot when Davy Butler increased their lead with a point immediately on the resumption. However, it was to be their only score.

Galtee upped their game somewhat during the half but in many instances over elaboration in possession scuppered their chances and they succeeded in scoring only two points in the course of the period.

Towards the end of the game they lost a player when Darren McGrath was red-carded.

The final score was 1-7 to 0-6 in favour of Kickhams, who had good performances from Davy Butler, Patrick Ryan, Eliot Thompson and Brian Hand, while Emmet Ryan, Damien Burke, Conor O’Sullivan and Darren McGrath tried hard for Galtee Rovers.

The winning captain, captain, Cathal Morrissey, was presented with the Mick Crowley Cup by board chairman, Tom English, after the game.

He thanked the sponsors, McGrath Oil Ltd, for their support, the referee and his officials for managing the game and wished Kickhams the very best against Upperchurch-Drombane in the county semi-final at Clonoulty on Monday.
