Cappwahite survived by a point, 5-8 to 2-16, in a dramatic end to the Bertie’s Bar Crosco Cup game, played at Cappawhite on Wednesday evening. Ten minutes into the second half it appeared there was going to be only one winner as Cappawhite led by 5-6 to 0-9, but Golden put in a fighting finish and it took a last minute point from a free by Timmy Cranley to give Cappawhite victory.

Golden have nobody only themselves to blame for the defeat. They hit some dreadful wides in the course of the hour and should never have been so far behind.

Golden started well and got the first three points but then the Cappahite full-forward, Paul Fitzgerald, came into his own and scored three goals in the course of the half to give his side a lead of 3-4 to 0-8 at the interval, even though playing against the breeze.

Matters got better on the resumption when Cappawhite added to their lead with 2-2 in the first ten minutes. All Golden could score during the same period was a point so Cappawhite looked to be in a strong position with a lead of of twelve points and twenty minutes to go.

In fact Golden didn’t begin to resurrect their act until the nineteenth minute and between then and the twenty-ninth minute they hauled Cappawhite back, helped by two goals by Thomas O’Halloran, so that the sides were level, 5-7 to 2-16, with a minute to go.

Cappawhite then got a free about forty metres out and Timmy Cranley made no mistake in scoring the winning point.
