Clonmel Commercials kept alive their hopes of a semi-final spot in the South IFC with a solid performance against an already qualified Ballyporeen side in Cahir on Saturday evening.
They now play Grangemockler in the final group game where both sides will need to win to join Carrick Swan, Fr. Sheehy’s and Ballyporeen in the semi-finals.
Commercials fielded with well established club players such as Eamon Hanrahan, David Lavin and Emmett Ryan alongside some younger faces such as Liam Ryan, Richie Gunne, Eric Walsh and Michael Nugent and played some excellent football at times. By the 15th minute they were five points clear with five separate scorers for Commercials in the opening quarter with Paudie White, Michael Nugent, Sammy Ryan, Eoin Leahy and Liam Murchan all pointing. Danny Barrett opened Ballyporeen’s account in the 17th minute from a free but two minutes later Commercials were awarded a penalty and although Emmett Ryan’s shot was saved by Jack English, Ryan followed up to tap to the net. Barrett responded with his second converted free of the evening. It took Ballyporeen until the 28th minute to score from play when the full forward again obliged. Emmett Ryan had a further point before the break to give Commercials a six point cushion at the break.
The game was effectively sealed just a minute after the restart when wing forward Liam Murchan goaled for Commercials to increase their lead to nine. In the 5th minute Sammy Ryan got Commercials’ third goal and despite a spirited second half performance from Ballyporeen which yielded six points, the result was never in any doubt.
