Killenaule showed that youth can carry the day with James Feehan, Greg Henry and Joe O D’wyer very much to the fore in the final minutes of this intriguing South SFC quarter final replay, winning 2-9 to 1-7
Killenaule were one point up at the break, 0-7 to 1-3. In the first 2 minutes of the second half they added 1-1 to their tally and then had to withstand a Cahir rally that fizzled out in the final few minutes with Killenaule getting the final score of the game from Tony Doyle.
The game was only 2 minutes old when Killenaule’s Declan Fanning scored a point from play. Benny Hickey pointed a 45 in reply and Padraig Whelan then gave Cahir the lead.
Killenaule scored a great point set up by Niall Bergin with Greg Henry providing the finish, the same player had a second when well placed by Kenneth Browne.
In the 16th minute Cahir were fortunate when a long ball was kicked from the middle of the field that bounced over the corner back into the hands of James McGrath who made no mistake in scoring past Mathew O’Donnell. In the 20th minute we had an exchange of points by Tony Doyle and Paddy O’Flaherty. Killenaule then took over with Cathal Bergin put through on two occasions, the first by brother Niall and the second by Declan Fanning recording 2 points from play with final score of the half from Kieran Bergin when Tony Doyle gave him a wonderful pass.
In the second half Killenaule pounced when Tony Doyle caught a great ball on the edge of the square, turned and fired into the roof of the net with Cathal Bergin adding a point from the kick out to go 1-8 to 1-3 clear.
Killenaule introduced Joe O’Dwyer for Kenneth Browne playing out around the middle of the field with Cahir’s Michael Tarrant and Padraig Hyland winning the duels and supplying the balls to the forwards with four unanswered points from Michael Tarrant, Padraig Whelan when a goal might have been on, Robbie Costigan and the fourth the best score of the evening from 50m out by Benny Hickey out of his hands,
Cahir took a bad line ball that went to Declan Fanning, in turn to Joe O’Dwyer who passed to Daniel Guinan on the run who gave no chance to Brian Enright in the Cahir goal with a fierce kick to leave Killenaule 2-8 to 1-7 in front.
Cahir then missed a golden chance when a Padraig Whelan shot was taken off the line having beaten the goalie.
Tony Doyle scored a point from a free taken by Greg Henry to run out convincing winners and a place in the Semi Finals against Clonmel Commercials, Moyle Rovers play Ardfinnan in the other semi.
