Level with nine minute to play, Carrick Swans’ Clean Ireland Recycling county senior hurling championship aspirations ended disappointingly at Holycross on Saturday.
Borris-Ileigh edged home by six points to claim a place in the quarter-finals.
Swan trailed 0-4 to 0-8 at the end of a very pedestrian first half. They were level at 0-3 each at the end of the first quarter, but Borris took over after Danny O’Hanlon’s pointed free in the 17th minute, to shoot five unanswered points.
Borris hit four points to Lee Wall’s reply in the first seven minutes of the second half. Leading by 0-12 to 0-5 they were rocked in the 38th minute when Bill Walsh’s delivery took a deflection to end up in the Borris net and Dale O’Hanlon and Danny O’Hanlon followed with points.
Further drama followed as a general melee about midfield in the 42nd minute with referee John O’Brien brandishing red cards for Swans duo Lee Wall and Bill Walsh and Borris’ Martin Maher and Jody Harkin.
Dan McCormack had a Borris point when play resumed but Danny O Hanlon followed up to goal the rebound of a Dale O Hanlon shot, bringing the sides level, 0-13 to 1-7.
However Borris found an extra gear. Kieran Maher and Keith Ryan pointed for them to steady things down. Alan P Ryan replied for Swans before Brendan Maher pointed a Borris free for a two point lead with seven minutes to play. Then a Keith Ryan goal proved decisive.
