The County Referees Committee has decided that, in keeping with national GAA policy, all referees, particularly those interested in refereeing at senior level within the county, will be expected to a attend the upcoming In Service courses along with taking a fitness assessment and written rules test in March. The In service courses will be held as follows, all at 7.30pm: February 14 in Cahir House Hotel for all South and half the West Referees (West referees will be notified which venue they are to attend), February 17 in Nenagh (venue to be confirmed) for all North Referees, and February 21 in Thurles (venue to be confirmed) for all Mid Referees and the other half of the West Referees. The courses will be delivered by Muiris O'Sullivan and Kevin Walsh, Munster Referee Tutors. On completion of this course each referee will receive a Certificate, which will be a prerequisite to qualifying for provincial and national refereeing panels. It is imperative that all referees attend these courses. A written test on rules of the game for all referees in the County will be held in Thurles after a fitness assessment in Dr Morris Park on Friday, March 11 2011 at 8pm. This is an exciting time for all referees in the County. In October 39 people completed the Foundation course for new referees which was an excellent turn out. Subsequently referees attended a seminar in Lr na Pirce where John Evans spoke on a coach's expectations from a referee and Paul Curran on a player's expectations. Other speakers included former inter-county All Ireland referees Paddy Russell and Willie Barrett, who is current Chairman of the Munster Referees Committee. The purpose of all these initiatives is to improve the standard of refereeing in the County and ensure a consistent and fair approach at all times. The Referees Committee are also looking to recruit referees assessors and anybody interested should contact the County Referees Co-ordinator, John Lonergan at firstname.lastname@example.org or on 086 2417763. Well done to John and his colleagues on the Referees Committee for all the effort they are putting into the training and coaching of referees. We hope that players, officials and clubs will fully support them and respect the authority of referees at all times.
