Champions Tipperary lost their grip on the All Ireland minor football title when beaten by Mayo in the quarter final at Croke Park on Saturday.

It was a huge disappointment for the Tipp players following a nine game unbeaten run in the championship over two seasons during which they won two Munster titles and the All Ireland.

But they never performed to their best on Saturday and Mayo were deserving winners 0-19 to 1-8.

Eight unanswered points in the first half set Mayo up for victory although a Tipp goal from Philip Quirke meant there were only four points in it at the break, 0-10 to 1-3.

But the champions could never get nearer than three points to the Connacht runners up who finished strongly to progress to the last four.

Manager David Power was disappointed with the result but paid glowing tribute to the efforts of his team over the past two seasons
