Tipperary Under 14 Girls pulled off a great one point victory over Clare in Kildysart. After eight minutes Tipperary were 1-3 to no score ahead, courtesy of three points from Kirsty Crotty Ryan (two frees) and a goal from Lara O’Dwyer. However, this only served to awaken Clare from their slumber as they pinned Tipperary in their own half for the next 15 minutes and put 4-2 on the board. During this time the Tipperary midfield and backs were under severe pressure as Clare laid siege to the goal. Just before half time Jean Kelly pounced for a goal to give Tipperary a life line. Half time score Clare 4-2 Tipperary 2-3.
Tipperary introduced Sarah Duggan for the second half who had an immediate impact. After seven minutes, Jean “Magic†Kelly pounced for her second goal and what a lift it gave Tipperary. From the kickout Lara O’Dwyer fielded and made a great individual solo run before capping it off with an unstoppable shot to the back of the net with 14 minutes left. At this stage, the Tipperary defence hit a mean streak, and every ball was cleared. Midfield secured every kickout and supplied quality possession to the forwards. Megan Coen scored a peach of a point after some great inter-play. Kate Davey came more and more into the game and made great attacks into the heart of the Clare defence. Girl of the match Lara O’Dwyer then added another point. Kirsty Crotty Ryan leveled the game with a free on the 20th minute. Clare were not finished and added two further points to edge ahead. Then on the 22nd minute Lara “Cullen†O’Dwyer scored her 3rd goal of the game to give Tipperary a one point advantage. Tipperary’s goal keeper Hollie Corcoran was rock solid under every ball and made some great saves to close out the game. Final score Tipperary 5-6 Clare 5-5.
This was a marvelous victory by a young Tipperary team, although nervous at times they stuck to their task and showed great spirit and work rate to come from behind. Lara O’Dwyer stood out with 3 goals but it must be said that every girl who wore a Tipperary jersey should be very proud of their performance.
