Fethard surprise Ardfinnan in close encounter

County SFC Round 1

County SFC Round 1

Fethard upset the formbook with a victory over Ardfinnan in the second game of a double-header of County SFC games at Clonmel Sportsfield on Saturday evening last. In a fiercely competitive contest in which no more than two points separated the sides at any stage, the teams were level at half-time, full-time, again at half-time in extra-time but in the end ‘The Blues’ prevailed.

Neither side deserved to lose on the night but it seemed Fethard wanted success that little bit more and this determination carried them through to round two. For Ardfinnan, it was a second defeat in just six days, having lost to Moyle Rovers in the South semi-final on the Bank Holiday Monday, and this latest setback ends their involvement in competitive senior football for 2012.

The winning score came in the second period of extra-time when Fethard substitute John Paul Looby took possession on the 40 and kicked a great point to secure his side’s passage in to round two of the County Senior Football Championship.
