The major difference between the sides in the Pa Sheehy Butchers minor football B championship semi-final featuring Rockwell/Rosegreen and Cashel King Cormacs at Golden on last Wednesday evening was the combination’s ability to pick off scores. They scored fourteen times in the course of the hour while Cashel could manage to register only seven times, winning 2-12 to 3-4
Rockwell/Rosegreen had the breeze in their favour and raced into an early lead of 1-3 to nil after ten minutes. They were faster to the ball, showed better combination and strove to make things happen rather than wait for them to do so.
Thomas Caulfield had Cashel’s first score in the thirteenth minute and they got a good break seven minutes later when Cormac Ryan goaled following a good build up. The combination continued to notch off points but Cashel got a second goal just before half-time, when Ryan scored a second time. Cashel were a bit flattered to trail by only two points on a scorline of 1-7 to 2-2 at the interval..
In fact Cashel went into the lead eight minutes after the resumption when Raymie O’Leary touched home a high delivery into the Rockwell/Rosegreen goal. This was as good as it got for Cashel. The combination raced ahead and Jack Tobin’s goal in the nineteenth minute sealed their victory and in the end they were deserving winners by 2-12 to 3-4.
The winners gave a good focused performance and were particularly good at runnng off the ball. They had an excellent free-taker in Tony Kerwick and others to impress were Craig O’Connell, Conor Walsh, Christopher Hickey and Mike Wilson.
Cashel were very much off the pace of the game and lacked the savvy of the Rosegreen players. Thomas Caulfield impressed but got little back up. Brian Fitzpatrick made an impact as did Martin Browne and Adam Kennedy.
