Skillful football and sheer determination by a talented group of girls saw the U14 footballers from Cahir take home the county A title for the third year in a row, when they met Templemore, in Boherlahan, on September 17.
Templemore settled quicker and had 4 points on the board before Cahir registered their first point through Katie Farrell. Then disaster when Templemore were awarded a penalty which was converted. Cahir replied with a point through Roisin O’Donnell. On Templemore’s next attack they were awarded a second penalty which they converted and this was soon followed by 2 more points. Cahir responded with a point through Katie Farrell to leave the scoreline 2-6 to 3 points. A marvellous goal by Aisling Moloney cut the deficit to 6 points at half time, 2-6 to 1-3.
The second half started with both sides exchanging points, Cahir’s scores coming from Aoife Corcoran and Katie Farrell. Heading into the final 15 minutes the Cahir girls’ skill, determination and fitness ensured we were winning all the 50/50 balls and a sweeping move down field ended with Katie Farrell smashing the ball to the net. Three unanswered points from Grainne Quirke, Kailee Burke and Aisling Moloney brought the teams level with less than 5 minutes to go. Another move saw the ball feed quickly to Roisin O’Donnell who sent the ball to the back of the net to put Cahir 3 points in front. From the kick out Aisling Moloney won possession and took on the Templemore defence and with the last kick of the game scored a great point to leave 4 points between the teams, 3-9 to 2-8. There were jubilant scenes when the cup was presented to captain Grainne Quirke. Well done to all the girls on a great victory and to the team management of Karl, Tony, Martin and Karina. A special thanks to all the parents for their support through out the year.
Cahir’s U12 team had a great win over Templemore in the final of the U12A Shield which was played in Rosegreen. Cahir led by 2 points to no score at half time. The second half was just as tense. There was both relief and excitement when the final whistle went with Cahir being victors on a scoreline of 4 points to 2. Well done to all the girls as this win was well deserved for all the hard work you put in during the year. Also well done to management team of Liam & Mary Shinnick, Larry and Mary Walsh, Mary O’Donnell, John O’Donoghue and trainer John Murphy.
