St Mary’s out of luck in South u-21 final

St Mary’s U/21s contributed to a wonderful South Final in Kilsheelan last Saturday, but unfortunately lost to worthy winners Carrick Swans by two points.

St Mary’s U/21s contributed to a wonderful South Final in Kilsheelan last Saturday, but unfortunately lost to worthy winners Carrick Swans by two points.

In truth neither team deserved to lose, but as is the nature of sport, there has to be a winner.

For the time of year, we were blessed with benign conditions and both teams contributed handsomely to what was a great game of hurling. We were behind for most of the match, being five points down half way through the first half, but eventually drew level with seven or eight minutes to go.

But we could never get our noses in front, but looked like we might nick it at the death, but for a magnificent save by the Swans keeper deep into added time.

Well done to Carrick Swans, but also well done to our gallant losers, who never gave up and fought to the last puck of the game.

The majority of these players will remain U/21s next year, so hopefully we can go one better in 2014.

A sincere thanks to all involved, especially players, panellists and mentors. A huge thank you to Sean O’Meara for his commitment to this group of players and to his selectors Paul O’Mahoney and Billy Caroll.

Our AGM is on this Friday night at 8.00 pm in GAA Centre on the Western Road. Members, parents of players and players are urged to attend. The club will complete its five year plan by the end of January and there will be an open forum during the AGM for people to give constructive suggestions that the newly elected executive will consider in the new year.

So please come along, remember the strength of a club is the involvement of its members.
