West JHC ‘A’ Final
Clonoulty-Ross 1-15 Kickhams 0-13
Clonoulty-Rossmore got off to a great start in the final of the Gleeson Concrete Ltd junior hurling championship A final at Leahy Park on Saturday evening and were well ahead at half-time. They continued their dominance of the game in the third quarter but Kickhams came storming back in the final quarter and while they didn’t overcome the deficit, they did give the winners a fright.
While Kickhams had the opening point following the throw-in, it was all Clonoulty after that. They scored five points and then in the 17th minute following a loveley movement involing all the full-forward line, Thomas Lyng finished the ball to the Kickhams net. They added six more points to give them a score of 1-11 at half-time.
After their initial burst Kickhams found the going difficult. They added two points from Padraig Morrissey and a Tommy Comerford free but then failed to score for sixteen minutes. They finished up the half with two points. Apart from the fact that they met stern opposition in the Clonoulty backs, they were also guilty of some very bad shooting, when opportunities presented themselves and had two wides for every point they scored during the half. The score at half-time was 1-11 to 0-5.
Kickhams had the breeze in the second-half but it was Clonoulty who went further ahead with four points during the third quarter. All Kickhams could notch up were two points so that the score entering the final period was 1-15 to 0-7.
The last quarter belonged to Kickhams who resurrected their act at last and made valiant efforts to overcome the deficit. The introduction of a number of replacements freshened up their attack and they scored six points during the period. However most of the scores came from frees and they lacked the ability to pick off points from play which they needed to do to reduce the deficit. In the end they were beaten by 1-15 to 0-13 as Clonoulty failed to score during the last fifteen minutes.
Clonoulty got good performances from Niall Shanahan, James Ryan (W), who was outstanding at wingback, Patrick Ryan, Paul Hayes and Seamus Carew. Kickhams were best served by David Shanahan, Stephen Buckley, Shane Morrissey and Tommy Comerford.
After the game the Dr. Hickey cup was presented to the winning captain, Niall Shanahan, by board chairman, Roger Kennedy.
