Tipperary travelled to Mullingar for the Semi Final of the Tesco Homegrown National Football League Division 3 against Armagh. They had already met Armagh in the League in Silverbridge, Armagh on March 31 with only a point separating the teams on that day, Armagh 1-10 Tipperary 2-6. Armagh were without two experienced players, Sinead McCleary and Mags McAlinden and Sharon Reel went off injured that day but all were available for the Semi-Final with Sinead McCleary and Sharon Reel starting. Tipperary had three changes as well from the team that met Armagh, Jackie O’Gorman replacing Helen Kennedy in goal, Brid Condon for Sinead Delahunty in the back line and Aoife Ryan for Edith Carroll.
The game started at a fast pace with Armagh registering the first goal after Caroline O’Hanlon ran from midfield to place it in the back of the net. Mairead Morrissey replied with a Tipperary goal in the following minute. Armagh quickly followed with two points in the eighth and ninth minutes but they were not to take the lead for too long. Mairead Morrissey again availed of an opportunity in the eleventh minute to score another goal when the ball deflected from the post.
Tipperary were ahead by a point when they got a penalty converted by Jennifer Grant and Tipperary were four points up.
Armagh scored three more points in the next ten minutes. With only eight minutes to the half time whistle Armagh got a point and this was to be followed with a goal from Mairead Tennyson giving Armagh back the lead by two points. Shellagh Carew and Edel Hanley scored another two points in normal time of the first half to bring the teams back level. With another two minutes of injury time each team managed to add another point to their score lines with the teams going in at half time level, Tipperary 3-3 Armagh 2-6.
The second half was not to be as nail biting as the first half. A strong wind rose at the start of the half and this was to have an influence on the game. It was the 38th minute before Armagh could register the first score, a point from a free taken by Caroline O’Hanlon. Armagh continued to dominate with another goal in the 42nd minute by Cailin Duffy. Armagh had the lead by four points and Tipperary were still settling into the game.
In the 49thh minute Edel Hanley scored a point from a free and Mairead Morrissey added to this in the 50th minute. Two minutes later Tipperary’s Aisling McCarthy added another point to the score line and this was to reduce the lead to one point. Tipperary’s period of scoring ended here and Armagh got a free in the 57th minute to add another point. It ended Tipperary 3-6 Armagh 3-8. Armagh will now meet Down in the Final.
