Tipperary intermediate team got their championship off to a flying start in Ardfinnan against Kerry on Saturday last. This Kerry team had four wins in the Ashling McGing championship (Senior B) against Cork, Meath, Dublin and Kildare’s second string teams.
Tipperary started in whirlwind fashion and had four points on the board in as many minutes thanks to two each from Shauna Ryan and Gillian O’Brien. On the tenth minute O’Brien sliced through the Kerry defence to score a wonderful goal.
Kerry then started to find their true form and put a few points on the scoreboard. Tipp goalkeeper Helen Kennedy was called into action with two fine reflex saves and became the hero of the first half by her exploits. Three pointed frees from Edel Hanley and one from play by Gillian O’Brien gave Tipperary a half time score of 1-8 to Kerry’s 0-4. The second half was identical to the first with Gillian O’Brien scoring another individual goal, Edel Hanley converted two pointed frees and two points from play. Sheelagh Carew was outstanding at centre half back and drove forward time after time to eventually put her name on the score board with a splendid point.
Again in the second half Kerry found themselves in front of goal one on one with our goalkeeper but failed to put their chances away. It’s something out management will have to have a look at for the remainder of the championships. All in all Tipperary will be pleased with the result which puts them into the Munster final on July 14.
Tipperary’s next game is against Longford in the All-Ireland Intermediate championship on July 11 in a Longford venue. This competition is separate from the Munster championship and Tipperary will have four games against Longford away, Sligo away Cavan at home and Roscommon away in the next few weeks.
