Hot on the heels of their U14A Hurling County success, Clonoulty/Rossmore maintained the club’s rich vein of winning form in the Tipperary Credit Union U16A Hurling Championship West Final played in Dundrum on Monday, September 17, with an impressive nine point margin victory over staunch rivals, Cashel KC.

Unbeaten on the way to the final, Clonoulty having gone into the game as firm favourites set a blistering early pace, running in six points in the opening fifteen minutes through Stephen Quinn and Dylan Quirke with two points each and one each by Gary Donnelly and James Hammersley before Conor Devitt and Aaron McCormack replied with points each for Cashel KC.

With Cashel KC now beginning to make better use of possession, they continued to make inroads into the Clonoulty defence and were rewarded with points each by Aaron McCormack, Tommy Caulfield and Jonathan Walsh but Clonoulty despite having a goal disallowed were well prepared and landed four further points through Ronan Heffernan (3) and one by Michael Ryan (W) for a half time tally of 0-10 to Cashel’s 0-5.

Two minutes into the second half Clonoulty had gone nine points clear following a Stephen Quinn fifty metre free from the sideline that went all the way to the net and an Aidan Carroll point and surely a mountain for Cashel to get back in the game.

And right back in the game they came and at the end of the next five minute spell Cashel KC had cut the deficit to four points with two goals in quick succession by their outstanding centre back Padraig O’Donoghue who also added his third later in the game.

However there would be no slip up by Clonoulty as their centre forward and man of the match Ronan Heffernan, who was proving a real thorn in the Cashel defence, fired over seven more points and along with James Hammersley who added two points, and brought Clonoulty’s final scoring total to 1-20 to Cashel KC 3-5 for a well deserved victory and their third in five years.

After the game West Bord na nOg Chairman Tom Dawson along with Dominic Morrissey, representing the sponsors, Tipperary Credit Union, were on hand to present the Clonoulty/Rossmore captain David Egan with the Matt Nugent trophy.
