The third annual Summer Lunch/Garden Party was held in Hotel Minella, Clonmel and attended by in excess of 300 people.
This was organised by the members of the South Tipperary Hospice Support Group, with Breda Ryan as Chairperson.
The uncertain weather conditions dictated that it be held indoors but a compromise was reached with the drinks reception held on the lawn and a delicious hot lunch was served indoors to follow.
South Tipperary Hospice is a truly community-owned organisation and has grown in strength by the involvement of the community.
The Home Care Team offices are in Mandeville House, The Quay, Clonmel, which is the permanent base for the nursing team.
Administrative functions are carried out by two part-time secretarial staff. All business related functions are performed by the Manager, who is also the contact person for the various support groups and fundraisers for the Movement.
All this is achieved with the invaluable and continued support of the voluntary committee members. The Hospice Movement could not exist without the huge efforts of the fundraisers.
A grant is received from the HSE of less than a third of the running costs. There is therefore an enormous dependence on the generous donations received from the people of South Tipperary/West Waterford.
One of the strengths of care for patients in our area is the ability for the patient to be nursed close to their home with all the benefits that this has for patients and their families.
Both St Bridget's Hospital in Carrick-on-Suir and St Theresa's in Clogheen have excellent facilities in their district hospitals, as has Tipperary town in Cluain Arainn.
There is, however, no provision for beds in Clonmel and this is a huge gap in the service.
The facilities, skills and professional generosity of these services in Clogheen, Carrick-on-Suir and Tipperary Town are a source of great pride to the movement by association.
In other fundraising activities later in the year, there will be the third Annual Concert organised once again by Sean O'Donovan which will take place in Hotel Minella on Friday 18th November.
Christmas cards are always for sale at that time of year also and available from any committee member. A walk will take place in Powerstown Park in August.
South Tipperary Hospice Support Group is most grateful to all who attended the Lunch and thank each and every one of them for their valued support.
Speaker on the day was Mary Connolly, Nurse Manager of the Home Care Team who gave an enlightening speech after the lunch.
