Actions speak louder than words

White Gables, Golden, Co. Tipperary

Dear Editor,

In relation to the stag hunting debate, Martin Mansergh, T.D., Minister of State can prevaricate until the cows come home (The Nationalist, 5 August 2010). He cannot, however, escape the wisdom of the adage that actions speak louder than words.

His actions. He stood up in Dail Eireann and spoke in support of proposed legislation inspired by Animal Rights Activists who form the heart and soul of the Green Party. He then voted in favour of that legislation. The proposals were allowed to be brought forward for one reason, and one reason only. They were part of the price that had to be paid to get the Green Party into bed. As a result, a couple of hundred decent and law-abiding citizens were deprived of a much cherished part of their lives.

His words. To the effect that no other country sports are threatened. Are we seriously expected to believe that if, after the next election, the Dail arithmetic is similar, no other country sport will become the sacrificial lamb on the same altar of political opportunism?

Spots and leopards come to mind.

Yours,

Douglas Butler.
