Mayoralty exclusion - time to play fair

7 Marian Terrace,

Clonmel

Dear Editor

I listened to and read with disbelief the comments of the councillors in the Town Hall following the walk out by members of the Workers and Unemployed Action Group when again, they had been excluded from the role of mayor. Councillor Ryan, along with councillors Prendergast, English, Shoer and O’Donnell suffered the same exclusion by the then Town Hall Club in 2004. What strange bedfellows self-serving politicians of parties and none make!

They, the current Town Hall Club, claim that with 57% of the vote they are entitled to the Mayoralty. It is not enough of a majority where democracy and integrity are at stake and the wishes of almost half of the electorate dismissed.

With regard to Councillor Ryan’s comment, “the children have left to go to the playground”, in his day job, he must appreciate, as we all do how important it is that little boys and girls learn to play fair, how to share, to take turns, to be inclusive and to acknowledge difference. Society suffers when these qualities are missing.

Yours,

Cora Gentles
