Well done to soccer league organisers

Ballintemple, Dundrum

Dear Editor,

I would like to congratulate the organisers, players, supporters, sponsors and all involved in the recently completed Town Soccer League Tournament held at Cashel Town FC.

With two young children of my own, and having lived in quite a few locations around the world, I have attended many children's sporting events. I think Irish sports clubs and societies, as a whole, do a great job with such events including hurling, camogie and rugby blitzes - my own club Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams included! - but this event in Cashel really was very impressive and should be recognised as an example of just how much good we have in our local communities (often overlooked) and the organisers applauded for their efforts.

From the invitation process (including an entry price of j5 per child), to team selection, through to coaching and refereeing, everything was of the highest standard. And while there was, rightly, a very competitive element to the tournament, it generated a great spirit of camaraderie and community between players and supporters alike. I believe many new friends were made on the pitch and on the touchline. And with children from the same schools or local clubs often selected on opposing teams, previous shared allegiances were temporarily put aside and new friendly rivalries formed amongst both players and parents alike. It made for great fun, banter and real honest, competitive spirit. My twins had to play against each other in one game, so it was a whole new experience for me and them.

In particular I would like to thank the coaches/organisers who offered not just their own squads, but all participants, continuous personal and team coaching , support and encouragement throughout the whole event. And when called upon to take their turn to referee a 'neutral' game, carried out their roles with the utmost care for the players, and with complete fairness and not a little humour also.

A great event with a simple, clear purpose, backed by hard work, organisation, simple execution, fair play and a real focus on doing what is right for the end 'customer' – in this case, the kids . I am already looking forward to next year's event.

Well done to all involved in the event. You did a fantastic job and should be very proud of your achievements.

Yours,

Martin O'Connor
