Wishes of electorate must be respected

7 Marian Terrace

Clonmel

Dear Editor

Last week, a pact between six elected members of three different parties in Clonmel Borough Council promises to exclude members of the Workers and Unemployed Action Group from the role of Mayor of Clonmel. This also happened after the last election and it would be shame on us all if it became a standard.

Seamus Healy says that they would have to agree to preconditions for the support of the other members. But democracy is at stake here. The electorate gave the members of the Workers and Unemployed Action Group 43.3% of the vote electing all five candidates. They have always on principle voted against the estimates and their mandate is increasing. Perhaps, the other elected members need to pay serious attention to the reasons why the Workers and Unemployed Action Group hold these opinions.

In this time of unprecedented economic crisis and rising unemployment, Clonmel Borough Council has an opportunity to set a precedent for other towns and cities to follow. Public money is not for wasting.

Democracy can only be served if the wishes of the electorate are respected.

Yours,

Cora Gentles.
